Mission
As stated in the AKDEC mission, our purpose as an organization is to improve and advance distance education in the state. Our core ideology consists of a desire to create distance education programs, structures, and environments that are sustainable, accountable, affordable, accessible, collaborative, and reciprocal between consumers and providers. We are striving for meaningful collaboration and consolidation/coordination as it makes sense for consumers without losing the individual character and philosophies of individual member institutions and organizations. Another aspect of our core ideology is that AKDEC needs to address the needs of a diverse population in Alaska, both urban and rural, and to support the development and delivery of distance education programming in culturally responsive ways.
There is also a strong belief that that there should be careful deliberation in the implementation of new technologies as we strive for equity and parity across the state. Lastly, there is a shared belief that distance education can provide a quality, engaging learning experience when providers embrace high standards for all aspects of instruction and assessment. It’s important to note that AKDEC believes in sustained partnerships with Alaska’s private sector. In no way does AKDEC intend to compete with the private sector to provide products and services. Instead, we hope to work closely with Alaskan companies to develop and deliver services to Alaskans.
